Hidden history
While visiting Carol Roper in London, we watched the movie “Everything is Illuminated”, by Lieve Schreiber. The film is about Jonathan, who is searching for the woman who saved his grandfather from the Nazis in Ukraine. When they arrive at the village where his grandfather fought, there is nothing left but a memorial plaque in the middle of the forest, lots of greenery and a blue sky. It was at that precise moment that I realized the painting of the Schiphol Fire needed to be painted over to conceal the trauma and heal wounds.
